The Prodigy music biography continued...
also included Keith Flint and Leeroy Thornhill (both Essex natives as well). Six months after their first public appearance at a British club, The Prodigy released the single "Charly," which became a huge hit in the rave scene at the time, hitting number one on the British dance charts, then crossing over to the pop charts, stalling only at number three. "Charly" was soon followed by the band's first full length album, Experience, a landmark release in the history of British rave music, which hit the Top Ten and easily went gold, spawning a series of Top 20 singles. In 1994, the Prodigy's second album, Music for the Jilted Generation, was released entering the UK album charts at #1. The album was nominated for a Mercury Prize, but Howlett made sure that The Prodigy didn't become overexposed and that they continued to maintain their integrity as a purveyor of hardcore dance music. The long-awaited third Prodigy album, The Fat of the Land, was released in 1997 just as the band headlined the Glastonbury festival on its opening night. Like its predecessors, the album represented a milestone in the development of both the band and the wider mainstream dance scene.
The album cemented the band's position as one of the most internationally successful acts in the dance genre, entering the British and American charts at number one, and boasting singles like "Smack My Bitch Up," which engendered controversy and with it even more fame for the band.
The Prodigy's fourth studio album, Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned was released seven years later, in August 2004. It was followed by Invaders Must Die in 2008. Though they may not be as prolific as other techno bands, Howlett and The Prodigy have remained true to their artistry. Their incendiary live shows are unparalleled and their willingness to experiment with everything from punk to rock legendary. They have sold over 16 million records worldwide which is unequalled in dance music history and their fans on both sides of the Atlantic are among the most devoted, something The Prodigy do not take for granted.
