The Chemical Brothers music biography continued...
met at the University of Manchester in 1992, just at the peak of Britain's fascination with a DJing style named Balearic. Pioneered at the island hot spot of Ibiza during the mid-'80s, Balearic relied on a blend of early house music, Italian disco, rare-groove jazz and funk, Northern soul, hip-hop, and alternative dance. The duo perfected it in the clubs of London and Manchester and created such a buzz that they were signed with deConstruction, calling themselves The Dust Brothers. In 1995, The Dust Brothers became The Chemical Brothers and their first LP 'Exit Planet Dust' was released in 1997. It sold 275,000 copies in Britain alone and over a million copies worldwide. Their second offering 'Dig Your Own Hole' was unleashed to rave reviews. "Block Rockin' Beats," the opening track, to that album swiftly became their second number one UK single. 'Dig Your Own Hole' went on to achieve gold status in the US, selling 500,000 there and over two million worldwide.
After their early successes, The Chemical Brothers continued to record and perform altering their music style to match the tenor of the dance club times. In July 2007, the duo released their sixth studio album, We Are the Night. The new album is heavily collaborated with the likes of Klaxons (on "All Rights Reversed"), Midlake (on "The Pills Won't Help You Now"), Ali Love (on "Do It Again") and Willy Mason (on "Battle Scars"). The first single, "Do It Again" was widely regarded as dance floor friendly, dominated by pop vocals and a minimalistic production approach. The track was regarded as a 'grower' with its simplistic catchy vocals and electro beat, even though it only garnered mixed reviews. The Chemical Brothers have also been credited as being one of the few truly arena-sized electronic acts. These live shows use large screens displaying psychedelic images, strobe lights and lasers that project over the crowd, whipping them into a frenzy. Whether you're introduced to the Chemical Brothers at one of these live shows, or in the clubs, you're not likely to ever forget this electronica sensation.
