Starship music biography continued...

alumni and lead singer Grace Slick, co-lead singer Mickey Thomas, guitarist Craig Chaquico, keyboardist David Freiberg, bassist Pete Sears and drummer Donny Baldwin. Their first effort in the studio resulted in "We Built This City," which surged to #1 on the charts in November 1985, and went gold, powering Starship's debut album, Knee Deep in the Hoopla to a Top Ten finish. Starship followed with a second number one single, "Sara," which was also featured on the album. A third single, "Tomorrow Doesn't Matter Tonight," made the Top 40. Strong sales of the album established Starship as an important band in their own right, though the group was reduced to a quartet with the departure of Pete Sears prior to their next recording, a song from the movie Mannequin. Released as a single in January 1987, "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now," written by Diane Warren and Albert Hammond, became Starship's third number one hit in April and eventually was certified as their second gold tune. Their second album, No Protection, was released in July 1987, peaked at number 12 and went gold. It contained "It's Not Over ('Til It's Over)," a single which reached the Top Ten. In 1988, Grace Slick left the band and there were other lineup changes as well. In addition, a physical altercation between Baldwin and Thomas, led to further divisions. In the spring of 1991, the band's label, RCA, released Greatest Hits (Ten Years and Change 1979-1991), but in 1992 the band's manager, Bill Thompson, classified Starship as defunct.

In 1992, Mickey Thomas organized a band that began playing dates billed as "Mickey Thomas' Starship" or "Starship Featuring Mickey Thomas." Since there were no objections from the owners of the name, Thomas continued, and in 2003 came out with a Greatest Hits album, in which he re-recorded Starship's biggest hits and some songs from his tenure in Jefferson Starship. For all their troubles, Starship released some great music and the name continues to conjure up the sound of a great rock and roll band.
