Relient K music biography continued...
and originally consisted of vocalist/guitarist/pianist Matt Thiessen, guitarist Matthew Hoopes, bassist Brian Pittman, and drummer Stephen Cushman. The band's first demo, All Work and No Play, caught the attention of popular Christian band dc Talk's Toby McKeehan (tobyMac), who later signed the band to his label, Gotee Records. In 2001, the band released their second album, The Anatomy of the Tongue in Cheek, which landed them in the Christian music limelight and even scored them an offer for a clothing deal with Abercrombie & Fitch (which they turned down). Relient K's momentum continued to build as they played nearly 200 shows in North America before the year closed out. In 2003, the band released Two Lefts Don't Make a Right...but Three Do, which went on to garner a Grammy nomination for Best Rock Gospel Album and won the Dove Award for "Modern Rock Album of the Year" in 2004. Relient K had officially arrived.
MMHMM, Relient K's fourth studio album, was released in November 2004 by Gotee/Capitol. MMHMM sold 51,000 copies in its first week, hitting number 15 on the Top 200 and number one for Christian albums. It eventually went gold, Relient K's third consecutive album to do so, and the band's mainstream crossover was evident with the singles "Be My Escape" and "Who I Am Hates Who I've Been" doing very well on modern rock radio and MTV. In March 2007, fans were treated to Five Score & Seven Years Ago (as in their fifth album in seven years). This effort was followed by 2008's B-side album The Bird and the Bee Sides. Although their great work ethic has resulted in crossover success, Relient K continues to stay true to their Christian roots. "We want to be humble, and present the Gospel gently-to act as employees of the church. We feel, that way, we're living the Gospel," Thiessen has said. "We also want to show kids that Christians can have a lot of fun, not in spite of their beliefs, but because of the joy of the Lord!" Fans couldn't agree more.
