Julio Iglesias music biography continued...
his compelling and heartfelt romantic ballads. Iglesias started out wanting to be a lawyer or a soccer player and it was while he was sidelined with an injury from the latter pursuit that he first picked up the guitar and began writing and strumming songs. In 1968, he was a contestant at the 1968 Spanish Song Festival at Benidorm, singing his original song "La Vida Sigue Igual." Iglesias won the first prize at the contest, which led to a record contract with Discos Columbia, an independent record label. Iglesisas started touring Europe and Latin America and built up a big following with hit like 1975's "Manuela." He caught the attention of CBS International which signed him in 1978 to record not only in Spanish but in French and Italian as well. At the turn of the decade, Iglesisas also started to concentrate on recording in English to capture the American and British markets as well. He scored a big hit in 1981 with a cover of "Begin the "Begin the Beguine," which went to #1 in both Britain and the United States, and was soon followed by the compilation album, Julio, another big seller.
Iglesias' breakout crossover success came in 1984 with 1100 Bel Air Place, a collection of duets. Featuring the Top Ten hit duet with Willie Nelson "To All the Girls I've Loved Before," the album sold over three million copies in America and peaked at number five on the pop charts; it also spawned "All of You," a hit duet with Diana Ross. Iglesias' popularity continued to grow throughout the '80s, although he only had one more pop crossover hit, 1988's "My Love," a duet with Stevie Wonder. In the 1990s and early 2000's, he went back to his roots, recording such albums as "Tango" and "Noche De Cuatro Lunas" and "Divorcio." In September 2006 a new English album titled "Romantic Classics" was released featuring the hit Julio Iglesisas songs, "I Want To Know What Love Is", "Careless Whisper", and "Right Here Waiting". Thus far, in his career, Iglesisas has performed over 5,000 concerts worldwide, proving that raw talent knows no bounds.
